The story is known as the Allegory of the Cave and is one of Platos most famous passages. The prisoners are only aware of one thing in the cave, the shadows created by the puppets. Platos understanding of human knowledge may be criticised on a number of grounds, the first and most fundamental of which in my opinion, would be the abstractness of his theory of knowledge, specifically, the theory of the forms. Many may argue that the idea of having a non-temporal, non-spatial, universally perfect form for every object in the phenomenal world is, quite plainly, ridiculous, on the grounds that perfect form is only relative to the person or standard judging that form. Take for example, Platos perfect form of beauty. We see numerous examples in everyday life of peoples perceptions, and differences of opinion in matters of beauty; in relation to art, sexual partners, cars, in fact almost anything. The idea that the amount of beauty in the above things can be agreed upon by every single person seems absurd enough, never mind the absurdity of a universal form of beauty being agreed upon. The elitism of Platos understanding may also be criticised, as it may seem immoral to some because of the arrogance portrayed by him. What Plato is actually claiming is that only a tiny minority of people like himself have true understanding, and that the rest are ignorant and wrong. Platos attitude is summed up by his quotation of Homer, to illustrate his point, effectively saying how he would rather be a surf in the house of some landless man than live and think as they do. A further criticism would be that Platos understanding of knowledge has no practical relevance, as it gives no indication or guide as to how to achieve the higher levels of intellect or, more importantly, how to apply his theory to the moral field of making everyday decisions.

(Volkmar et al, 2005, p.2) Autism has an interesting and varied history, reaching farther back, as some researchers have theorized than the pioneers who first published accounts of the disorder; Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger. (Frith, 2003, p.5) The inquiry into the history of autism leads one to believe that the disorder has been around undiagnosed for centuries before. Uta Frith (2003) reflects on cases of people with the probability of having some degree of the disorder, throughout history. She discusses, among others a Franciscan monk, Brother Juniper whom in his various encounters with fellow brethren and community, proved to be a person that lacked the ability to be aware that others had their own thoughts about things and occurances. This is indicative of the essence of autism as claimed by Baron-Cohen et al (2006). They assert that children with autism â€Å"have delays in the development of theory of mind†, (p.716) which is what Frith is drawing attention to above. Namely, the inability to comprehend the idea that people have their own thoughts and emotions outside of oneself. Further exploration into the historical roots of autism is cited by Happe (1999). She reviews folktales of young men who are of an innocent nature and misinterpret advice given to them by literally comprehending it. One example given is from a traditional Malta story about a boy named Gahan. As the story goes, Gahan was late getting up on a Sunday morning and was not able to accompany his mother to church. Before she left she reminded Gahan to â€Å"pull the door behind [him]†. Gahan understood this statement literally, not figuratively. Poor Gahan subsequently then pulled the entire door by the door handle all the distance to church to meet his mother and the congregation, aghast at his action. (p.8) Though there are possible historical accounts, autism was not thoroughly conceptualized until Leo Kanner and then a year later, Hans Asperger published their initial papers. In 1943, Leo Kanner offered clinical insight in his published work of 11 children who shared common threads of behavior. These attributes support the development of his concept of â€Å"early infantile autism†. (Fitzgerald and Lyons, 2007, p.2022) Included here are the features of his findings through his research: extreme autisitc aloneness, anxiously obsessive desire for the preservation of sameness, excellant rote memory, delayed echolalia, oversensitivity to stimuli, limitation on the variety of spontaneous activity, good cognitive potentialities, and highly intelligent families. (Happe, 1999, pp.9-10) A year later, Hans Asperger unaware of Kanner’s work published a dissertation concerning autism. Amazingly, the two clinicians individually, came up with the term â€Å"autistic†. (Happe, 1999, p.10) Originally, the word came from Eugen Bleuler who coined the term to describe the social extraction in adults with schizophrenia. Both Kanner and Asperger also believed that the nature of this affliction was inborn. They both noted finding the children not flexible with changes, socially detached, having strange idiosyncratic interests, and generally highly enjoyed routines. (Happe, 1999, p.11) In 1979, Wing and Gould (Dodd, 2005) suggest there was a way to explain autism in a more broad and social fashion. They named this framework the â€Å"triad of impairments†. (p.2) They claim there are three areas of deficits as documented by their research; the impairment of social interaction, of social communication, and of social imagination. Later, they introduced a broader term of â€Å"autistic spectrum† (p.2) which is meant to represent a linking or continuum of autism that serves to describe mild to severe cases including Asperger’s disorder. This shift signifies a progressive move in the direction of the currently accepted definition of autism, also known as ASD. The spectrum construct includes cases today that would not have met Leo Kanner’s criteria. Autism now, has the basis to form the clinical diagnostic criteria used by the American Psychiatric Association in the DSM-IV (1994) and the World Health Organization in the ICD-10 (1992) to aid medical practioners in the diagnosis process with much gratitude for Kanner and Asperger as well as for Wing and Gould. The diagnostic term â€Å"pervasive developmental disorder† or PDD was introduced into the DSM-III in 1980 along with a specifically designed example of autism, autistic disorder. In 1992 the ICD-10 was published and included a broader range of categories of autism. Finally, in 1994, the DSM-IV redefined criteria for autism and added three new classes of PDD, including Asperger’s disorder. (Volkmar et al, 2005, p.2) Asperger’s disorder, as defined in the DSM-IV is juxtaposed with autistic disorder and the areas of lesser deficits in Asperger’s disorder are in â€Å"language aquisition† and â€Å"cognitive development†. (1994, p.8 0) Though the DSM-IV and the ICD-10 are the universally recognized manuals for diagnosing autism being partially based off the â€Å"triad of impairments†, they individually contain different classifications under the umbrella of PDD. The ICD-10 classifies what is known traditionally as classical autism, as â€Å"childhood autism† and the DSM-IV with the same criteria, names it â€Å"autistic disorder†. This trend of inconsistency is continued throughout both manuals. (Volkmar et al, 2005, p. 6) There is a growing body of evidence that suggests the current trend of classification for both autistic disorder and Asperger’s disorder is more likely to be considered ASD versus PDD. The works include Berckelaer-Onnes and Noens (2005), Shattock (2005), and Bolt et al (2006). To add to the confusion, there are also terms used by professionals and lay people alike within the spectrum to designate varying levels of cognitive and adaptive ability of persons with A SD, chiefly high-functioning and low-funtioning autism. (University of Cambridge, 2007) In addition, there is evidence of controversy of clarity of the definition of high-functioning autism. Dissanayake and Macintosh (2004) state there is â€Å"insufficient evidence to establish the validity of Asperger’s disorder as a syndrome distinct from high-functioning autism†. (p.421) These issues of variability of terms associated with autism allows for possibly a too flexible framework of labels. The evidence seems to point in the direction that due to the varying display of classifications within autism after the â€Å"triad of impairments† was accepted, the trend affected the varying display of classification within both the DSM-IV and the ICD-10. Using the evidence of the irregularity of presentation, a point can be made of the continual enigmatic nature of autism in this respect. If the two authoratative authors of the DSM-IV and the ICD-10 are not in agreeance of the classification of autism, one may speculate equal puzzlement among professionals in the field diagnosing the disorder. Extrapilating further, recounting the history of the definition of autism, one may say fairly the confusion surrounding autism may be the impetus for yet another more singular and universal set of classifications and descriptions. As the adage goes, ‘practice makes perfect. Every endeavor, be it sports, singing competition or a spelling bee, practice is essential to guarantee good results. University education is no exception, and persistent studying is vital for delighting grades. Is this article relevant and helpful to you? Did its title spark questions in you like what type of a student and reader I am? Am I conducting my studies the right way and so forth? The other benefit is that great reading skills will help you sail through the not so exciting topics you need to learn regardless. As opposed to reading an amusing article from a fashion magazine or a novel that you have picked for yourself, some university materials can be not as engaging. The objective of this article is to provide you with some studying and revision techniques that will guide you as you prepare for the exam but have little time on your side to go through all the notes. What is persistent reading? According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, an inert person is who has little or no impact on something and lack the desire to do so. Similarly, a passive reader does not bother to examine, scrutinize or appraise any content. On the contrary, an active reader takes the whole process to another level as they put in more effort. They not only read through the pages, but they are eager to know why the author is inclined to their views or statements, they are inquisitive. Three phases characterize the study activity; before the study, during the research and post-study and the three stages play a different role in the study process. For the duration of the study, the lively reader will divide the topic into small sections/subheadings that will organize the process as each subsection is assigned a specific time. Additionally, the learner poses queries which they anticipate the material to respond to as the contents unfold. Ultimately after completing the study, an active reader will make short notes that recap what they have learned. The remaining question that lingers is, how do I become an active reader? Or if you are already one, how do you perfect this art? Well, the answer is simple, practice, dedication and more practice. Popular active studying methods Flick through the material Perusing through the material is the practice of highlighting and memorizing the important parts of the content exclusive of an in-depth revision. Flicking through is convenient for you especially when you are facing time constraints although, for an active reader, this is merely the beginning of the study process. During the period leading to the examination, browsing through the chapters will shed some light on what the topics are about giving you a rough idea of what to expect. The use of SQ3R results in better performance making the efforts exerted profitably rewarding. Consequently, what is SQ3R all about? Survey The survey involves perusing through the materials and identifying the important aspects such as the title, the outline, table of contents and if there are any demonstrations like charts, tables, graphs and pictures in the chapter. Essentially, by surveying, you are observing the chapter to determine the theme(s) that run through to get a feeling of what to expect when you begin reading. You will also want to be on the lookout for jargons (words you are seeing for the first time and do not know how to pronounce or spell them). Surveying gives you ample time to research the words on the internet or by using a dictionary. Ideally, the survey should take as little time as you possibly can depending on the length of the chapter. At this juncture, critical reading and evaluation are of no importance since you only need to get a hold of the principal theme. Question At this point, you need to ask yourself these four main questions and attempt to answer them. What is the fundamental idea? Is there any proof to uphold the idea? What are they? Are there illustrations used as proof? How does this idea associate to the journal (or any other material you are reading) and to me as a person? The best way to go about this is to read every first heading, subheading, sentence of each passage and convert it into a question. The questions will to some extent convey the idea(s) the author is trying to put across. Forming the questions is not the only task at this stage. You are also required to answer them or at least make an effort. By simply forming the questions you will not have satisfied the conditions necessary for this step, and your efforts will have been in vain. Read This word means exactly how it spells, read. Take your time and study. Studying can be tiresome as it is a weak competitor for most students, but still, you need to study. To break the monotony, take a short break ranging from 10-15 minutes between your studying. You can choose to use the Pomodoro system of productivity and assign each topic a specific time incorporating short breaks in between. This method will help you remain focused on accomplishing the mission at hand. The best way to ensure that you truly understand what you are reading is by writing short notes, highlighting or writing on the margin. The short notes should be the main points, facts or formula you come across while studying. The benefit of writing short notes or highlighting is it not only improves your level of comprehension, but it also guarantees that you capture the man ideas expressed. In case you are using the marker, ensure you do not go on a making spray as the aim is not to be the best ‘highlighter but fathom the material. Recall This step is the defining factor that concludes whether you have grasped and understood what you have been reading. Different people term it differently, but the meaning remains uncorrupted. The suggested procedure is first to put your books aside and try to recall what you have learned and recognized vociferous (you can record for future usage). Finally, look at the questions you had set up and establish whether you answered them or not and if not, repeat the process and reread the materials and see if you will capture something new. Review Reviewing is the last step in the SQ3R reading system. Reviewing is perhaps the most important step that as a student you should adhere to carefully. Owing to the human nature, we tend to forget things over time and as such, you should constantly review what you read, recite it over and over again and in case you have forgotten, please consult your book. A few days to the test, you should reread your materials more frequently (maybe in the morning and at night before going to bed), but if the exam is a few weeks away, weekly reviews should be enough. My advice, strive to be as enthusiastic as you can during your class readings as it matters a lot. For your other leisure readings, you can be inert or decide to take the active reading all the way. The SQ3R stood out form the rest due to its unique features; besides being time consuming and effort dependent, it yields satisfying results. Investigate which one works best for you and run with it towards your goal of becoming a competent reader. Persistent studying is vital for any student especially for article writing and responding to argumentative questions. Active studying not only improves the students comprehension ability, but it also makes them good at articulating issues by asking questions before processing any information. ‘Change is the only constant thing in life, most people say. Change takes time, and you should not pressure yourself beyond your ability while adopting the new study techniques. To put it bluntly, America uses Turkey when it needs it, but other than that, Turkey is not a major priority of U.S. foreign policy. The problem with this situation is that Turkey often suffers. It can be noted that U.S. foreign policy has aided modern Turkey in several ways. However, for the most part, U.S. foreign policy has slowed the growth and development of modern Turkey. The Gulf War of 1991 left Turkey crippled, but it gained a strong relationship with the United States. Turkey played a crucial role in the first Gulf War and in post-Gulf War activities. During the 1991 Gulf War, Turkey allowed U.S. troops to operate on its soil and allowed its border to be used to wage a northern attack on Iraq (Ciarrocca). After the war was over, U.S. fighter jets used the Turkish air base, Incirlik, to patrol the UN-mandated northern "no fly" zone in Iraq (Hedges). There are ways that can be done to help go through the process of eliminating stress and negativity and feeding our human minds with a good and positive outlook in life. Having a positive mentality and eliminating the negativity of stress in ourselves is not going to just fall upon us. It’s really a choice we have to make. Being positive doesn’t necessarily come naturally. It’s our decision that we have to make daily. Is stress an enemy to us human beings? Of course it is because you deal with so much negative energy. That alone merges to different type of problems that we encounter in our daily lifestyle. Be at work or at home, thus this type of emotions is everywhere. We can control all the stress and negativity we encounter by means of responding to new challenges by telling ourselves that we are capable of facing our fears and doing what is right. All this is a way of eliminating such negative thoughts and a turnaround of a positive spin. That is a good start of leading a better life. Visualization, this technique can be achieved by means of installing positive expectations and believe that we can do it. Therefore if we literally eliminate the old feelings and shadow it with the new and positive ways. We can achieve a good and healthy mind and soul. We are not meant to live a miserable and unfulfilled life. When we discover the path of visualizing what we really want to achieve in life. Then we can discover and start working in some realm associated with a positive attitude not negative and we all will thrive to the fullest of success. Critical thinking Whenever we tend to catch ourselves being critical or even having a negative thought in mind is very stressful. Thinking negative of another person, circumstances or anything that can lead a negative reaction is a challenge. Make it a priority also to keep your well pure. If somehow in some points you’re being or if somebody is being critical of you or trying to lead you in a bad light. Recognize that there is a stone coming your way. We don’t need to dwell on it, or get upset and vengeful. When these stages occur the best thing to do is pull ourselves back and have this inner question â€Å"Can I take up such challenge to control myself†? One way to look at our level in coping with these feelings is our human emotions. Our body alone is like a bucket of energy where we store pure energy alone. May it be negative or positive. We might want to declutter our world by human cleanse also. By means of letting your choice reflect your taste. Whether you let the stress and negative thoughts handle your life or fight the biggest fight. Motivation is one of the best key in life. Surrounding ourselves with positive individuals will help us move on to the right track. Keep pressing forward. The key to rising higher is to keep looking to where you want to go. Keep a positive vision and see yourself accomplishing your goals and fulfilling your destiny. Meditation Relax and take a deep breath. Always let in a positive spirit to avoid negative thoughts. Personal power, acceptance, and inner love will help restore our boundaries to normal settings. Maintaining all these positive factors are guides us in removing old baggage and replacing it with the good ones. Let in a higher power. The answer to this is simply having God in our hearts. Let our choice reflect our taste and by then when we have that higher power restored in our souls. We are on the right track. We all need to get in peace of who we really are. Exercise is also the best key. It releases such tension in due time and provides us with energy to handle anything that may come our way. One way also to eliminate stress and negativity is managing our time wisely. We must always find a way to have our own me time. Have a habit of writing everything down on paper on what to do, where to go, what else needs to be done or etc. is a good way of managing your time wisely. Handle important task first and eliminate unessential task. Exercise and eating right is also a good factor in eliminating stress and the entire negative that surrounds us. If we are fit, and nothing else is really seriously wrong in our lives, than we can probably manage a fair amount of frustration, delay, unfairness, misfortune in whatever form. Surrender and let in Instead of fighting and feeling negative about your thoughts that can lead to stress. Surrender to them and you will see that the negative feelings will quickly eliminate and lose its power over our human minds. When we are in a world of so much stress fight it by accepting it and try not to think too deep into it. Cause in some points there are stressors that are really not even meant to be paid attention too at all. We should always observe the feeling in our mind and body without labeling or either judging it by all means. Self confidence is also one of the best tools for us to use to reach our goals and be happy in life. There is always room for improvement with our inner feelings to avoid accumulating stress by means of having faith in everything we do and encounter. Be realistic about life alone. Set realistic goals. Ask yourself questions before we even execute. Think positive thoughts. Know what you want and do what is right. Nobody can hold you down if you believe. For God alone does not focus on what’s wrong with us. He’s not looking at all our faults and weaknesses. He’s looking at how far we’ve come along and how much we’re growing as a person. Eliminating stress and negativity can be achieved by thinking positive. It’s time to unburden ourselves by receiving progress, initiative, inner peace, love, setting goal, prayers, and motivation. My personal experience in life alone dealing with stress and so much negative alone is challenging. There are times where in I just can’t handle the situation that I’m in yet I pushed myself for the better by pressing forward, surrounding myself with positive people, and learn how to deal with stress by means of how to handle my emotions. This is one of the most significant aspects in coping. Overall by reading every word in this essay is a step in what are the ways in dealing with everyday stress and negativity in general. Looking at the extreme nature of the jobs they are far from satisfying any normal worker, even if compensation is considered, but the jobs would be satisfying to a special breed of people who find the jobs as challenging. The four individuals displayed high levels of job satisfaction, job involvement and organizational commitment that enable them to accept the hardships as a positive challenge. These individuals are positive people because negative people are usually not satisfied with their jobs, more so if the jobs are as stressfu l as mentioned in the case. These individuals also have positive core self-evaluation that contributed to their being more satisfied with their jobs even under extreme conditions. When we talk about an individual, or certain group of individuals, job satisfaction solely depends on their perspective. For them, job satisfaction need not be high salary, better position or other job conditions. What factors may motivate us, may not give us happiness. Personality plays a very important role in job satisfaction. People who believe in their inner self and basic competence are more satisfied than those who don’t have self core evaluation. Hence only certain individuals are attracted to these type of  jobs, and it’s not just the characteristics of the job. 2. What characteristics of these jobs might contribute to increased levels of job satisfaction? Rajesh bisht is an investment banker. The way it has been described about Mr. Rajesh here shows that he is very enthusiastic about his work, which implies that he loves what he does. Being an investment banker requires strong background in finance as it involves a lot of financial analysis of a company or an organization. The work requires him to analyze and give solutions to an organization which might be in crisis. So the entire organization is dependent on Mr. Rajesh’s analysis. This job requires more involvement and Mr. Rajesh likes his responsibility. In Ravi Goyal’s case, he heads the international marketing team of an engineering firm. Ravi Goyal is always and ever ready to work because his work involves maintaining relationships globally. CASE 2: Long hours, hundreds of emails and no sleep: does this sound like a satisfying job? Observations: Characteristics of the 4 jobs were quite similar. Copia and Copiousness in Rhetoric The rhetorical term copia refers to expansive richness and amplification as a stylistic goal. Also called  copiousness and abundances.  In Renaissance rhetoric, the figures of speech were recommended as ways to vary students means of expression and develop copia.  Copia (from the Latin for abundance) is the title of an influential rhetoric text published in 1512 by Dutch scholar Desiderius Erasmus. Pronunciation: KO-pee-ya Examples and Observations Because ancient rhetoricians believed that language was a powerful force for persuasion, they urged their students to develop copia in all parts of their art. Copia can be loosely translated from Latin to mean an abundant and ready supply of language- something appropriate to say or write whenever the occasion arises. Ancient teaching about rhetoric is everywhere infused with the notions of expansiveness, amplification, abundance.(Sharon Crowley and Debra Hawhee, Ancient Rhetorics for Modern Students. Pearson, 2004)Erasmus on Copia- Erasmus is one of the early enunciators of that sanest of all precepts about writing: write, write, and again write. He also recommends the exercise of keeping a commonplace book; of paraphrasing poetry into prose, and vice versa; of rendering the same subject in two or more styles; of proving a proposition along several different lines of argument; and of construing from Latin into Greek...The first book of De Copia showed the student how to use the sche mes and tropes (elocutio) for the purpose of variation; the second book instructed the student in the use of topics (inventio) for the same purpose...By way of illustrating copia, Erasmus in Chapter 33 of Book One presents 150 variations of the sentence Tuae literae me magnopere delectarunt [Your letter has pleased me greatly]...(Edward P.J. Although Erasmus and his contemporaries clearly were delighted by language variation and exuberance (think of Shakespeares indulgence in his comedies), the idea was not simply to pile up more words. Rather copiousness was about providing options, building stylistic fluency that would allow writers to draw upon a large array of articulations, choosing the most desirable.(Steven Lynn, Rhetoric and Composition: An Introduction. Press, 2010) Backlash Against CopiaThe latter part of the sixteenth century and the first part of the seventeenth witnessed a reaction against eloquence, specifically against Ciceronian style as a model for writers, both in Latin and in vernacular literature (Montaigne, for example)... The anti-Ciceronians distrusted eloquence as something speciously ornamental, therefore insincere, self-conscious, unsuited for expressing private or adventurous reflections or disclosures of the self... It was [Francis] Bacon, not inappropriately, who wrote the epitaph of copia in that famous passage of his Advancement for Learning (1605) where he describes the first distemper of learning when men study words and not matter....It is ironical that in later years Bacon came to dislike the excesses of Senecan style nearly as much as those of copie. It is likewise ironical that the man who deplored the former popularity of copia was, of all writers in his time, most responsive to the advice in De copia about collectin g notes. Bacons obsessive fondness in his writings for sententiae, aphorisms, maxims, formulae, apophthegms, his promptuary, and his habit of keeping commonplace books were a tribute to the methods taught by Erasmus and the other humanists. Bacon was more indebted to prescriptions for copia than he allowed, and his prose leaves little doubt that he was studious of words as well as matter.(Craig R.
